Lunch
Box For Kids BBQ - Thank you!
Thanks to your involvement and generosity at the BBQ, we were
able to raise $671.32 which is $221 more than last year and means that Hope for
the City will be able to provide 952 Lunches to children in need. That's HUGE
and we can't thank you enough for your support!
I am especially grateful to the WON Committee for their continued enthusiastic
support for Hope for the City, to our awesome Grillers: Mark Parten, Bill Krake,
Allen Bernard & Karen Harris, and to my associates at HFTC who volunteered
to help set up and clean up. Because of all of you, this event was not only a
support to our local community, it was a lot of fun!
Summer brings additional stress for some parents when their stretched budgets
have to stretch even more because their children do not have access to free and
reduced fee school lunch and breakfast programs. As a result, children are
often going hungry. In fact, children account for 40 percent of Minnesota's
hungry. Findings from a 2011 study conducted by Feeding America, a national
hunger-relief charity, show that more than 212,000 children in Minnesota are at
risk of hunger on any given day.
Hope for the City is committed to alleviating childhood hunger. Our Lunch Box
for Kids program is one example of how we are working to address childhood
hunger, especially in the summer.
Each year, we assemble thousands of child-oriented lunch boxes. Every
"lunch box" is filled with enough nutritious, kid-friendly food to
provide two kids lunch for two weeks. In addition to nutritious shelf-stable
food, such as canned vegetables and fruit, each Lunch Box for Kids contains two
packages of Hope Meals, each containing six servings of fortified rice and
beans or macaroni and cheese meals. The lunch boxes are then distributed to our
49 community partners who ensure they reach families in need.
Thank you for your continued support of all that we do at Hope for the City!
